Ready, Set, Fashion! Calista’s Journey to Entrepreneurship

Another person has started here, to go far in the community with her newly learned skills. Calista chose SUNY Ulster over a well-known private college and says it was “it was one of the best decisions I have ever made” as she knew she wanted to be an involved part of a small business and remain local.

Calista has been designing and sewing for about ten years now. She credits her grandmother for teaching her garment creation basics before her time in college. Saying that her grandmother has been one of her biggest supporters and inspirations.

Most recently, she has turned her long time love of sewing and designing into a blossoming career. Thanks to the real world experience gained from her time in the fashion design program.

SUNY Ulster, Here to Help.

The fashion curriculum at SUNY Ulster has provided continuous opportunities that have shaped Calista’s life, livelihood, and career. The professors on campus encouraged and emboldened Calista to explore her talents and perfect her skills. She enhanced her design methods, portfolio building and interview skills to graduate at her highest potential as a result. Along with the well planned curriculum, the program offered Calista many internship opportunities that were vital to learn the industry first hand. Therefore she interned with brands you might know like: the Robert Tonner Doll Company, Eleven Six Knitwear, and Karina Dresses.

Calista was proud to say that this school guided and molded her into a networking queen! To clarify she recalls one of the most impactful parts of her educational journey; that SUNY Ulster “provided endless opportunities to meet new people and interact with other local businesses and entrepreneurs in the fashion industry.”

After completing her internship with Karina Dresses, the company offered her a full time position. They realized the vigor and passion she had started to hone in on and wanted her skills to stay at their business. Calista has been working there for almost three years as the Social Media Manager and Junior Design Assistant for the brand located in Uptown Kingston. She continues gaining skill and experience while starting ventures of her own in the world of fashion.

Her design aesthetic is athletically inclined clothing with an elegant flair; a mix of sporty and sophistication. In her own words “I enjoy playing with style lines and geometric shapes to create a unique style.” She has used that as a base for a children’s clothing line, entirely of her own making, coming soon.

Calista was happy to express how grateful she is for the fashion program at SUNY Ulster. The way it offered various tools and resources to kickstart her passion, and build strong relationships that continue to support and guide her future to this day. In addition, this driven young entrepreneur has started her own Spring kid’s clothing line. It’s called Cali Bee Kids and is set to launch this August! SUNY Ulster Students Go International with COIL

Here at SUNY Ulster, we have several courses hosting COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) projects. Students can sign up for these classes and learn to communicate within collaborative teams, which pair a SUNY Ulster team with a team from a college in another country. COIL courses give Ulster students the opportunity to learn from another culture, which is increasingly important in today’s global market.

I didn’t know anything about the COIL program until I took an entrepreneurship class during the Spring 2018 semester. I was already excited to learn about the different aspects of starting and running a business when I discovered that our class would be participating in a COIL project. Our professor, Dr. Mindy Kole, explained that our class would be working with students from the Netherlands. I was excited, but I had no idea how it was going to work. How would we work with students that far away? How would we meet? When would we meet? What would we do?

For a six week period, the class interacted in assigned groups with students from the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS). First, Ulster students met the Dutch course’s teacher, Eva Haug, Professor and COIL Coordinator at AUAS. Dr. Kole assigned our class to look up interesting facts about the Netherlands. A meeting was set up using the Zoom video conferencing application via the internet. An overhead projector was also set up so the class could see and meet Professor Haug. Each of us had an opportunity to ask questions about the Netherlands. Professor Haug asked the Ulster class a number of questions about the United States. It was an exciting cultural exchange. We learned many new things about the Netherlands, and we were able to share our perspectives about our own culture. It was fun to discover the many differences and similarities.

During our Entrepreneurship COIL class project, we were separated into groups. Small groups of Ulster students were given two or three student partners in Amsterdam. We were assigned to reach out to these students using the mobile apps we already carry on our cell phones. Some students used Facebook Messenger, some used WhatsApp, and some used Skype. The class buzzed with conversation about the different mobile apps they preferred. We were also required to use our international dialing code to reach students in the Netherlands – something not usually done in the United States.

Our COIL project provided an opportunity for our class to build teamwork and communication skills. We were able to work with people from another culture and share our experiences. We used Facebook and WhatsApp to collaborate, ask questions, and send photos from our hometown. Dr. Kole and Professor Haug guided us every step of the way with project outlines and protocols to follow. My team project consisted of a report and PowerPoint presentation on social entrepreneurship, where the goal of a business is to make a profit while providing a benefit to society. It was fascinating to learn how the United States and the Netherlands approach this type of business model.

I highly recommend COIL courses. They allow students to build 21st century skills of communication, teamwork, and problem solving, all at no additional tuition cost to class participants. It is a great experience to put on a resume, and students also receive a COIL certificate upon completion of the course. We live in a time when we can communicate over vast distances with mobile apps and internet connections. Why not use these tools to learn and build relationships around the world? SUNY Ulster students should be the first to take advantage of this unique academic opportunity!

SUNY Ulster Students Work with Local Designers, Host Special Fashion Event

31043996405_692f88f0a9_kStudents in the fashion, entrepreneurship, and music departments successfully planned and produced their very own fashion show this past week! Members of the Introduction to Fashion and Introduction to Entrepreneurship classes collaborated to create outfits and plan Fashion & Entrepreneurship: Stories and Role Models, a fashion show and informative discussion held on Wednesday, November 16, at the Stone Ridge campus. The event highlighted the designs, merchandise, and entrepreneurial stories of seven fashion companies from the local community. The designers and companies who worked with the students included Leong Ong, Pool 28, LLC; Cal Patch, Hodge Podge Farm; Karina Cousineau, Karina Dresses; Margrit Wenzel, LGND Supply Co; Beth Petramale, Next Boutique; Ryan Roche, Ryan Roche Fashion; and Kelly Lyndgaard, Unshattered. A following panel discussion with the business owners offered wisdom and advice for the up-and-coming designers and entrepreneurs, as well as the public.

31043857995_68d4e19a5c_kTo create the show, the Fashion and Entrepreneurship students were put into teams and received valuable experience while they studied the work of the fashion companies, met with the business owners, held interviews about their designs and companies, and planned the fashion show. The students compiled what they learned about each company into a story that they shared at the show. Designs were showcased using students as models. A group of students studying Music Entrepreneurship designed the music for the event, and students planned and implemented the marketing for the fashion show.

Assistant Professor Mindy Kole, Director of the Darlene L. Pfeiffer Center for Entrepreneurial Studies, was enthusiastic about
the event and its importance to Ulster: “Projects like Fashion & Entrepreneurship: Stories and Role Models are what set SUNY Ulster apart from other colleges and universities. Here at SUNY Ulster, students don’t just learn about entrepreneurship and fashion from lectures and textbooks, they learn by30929930491_a1047e69e5_k immersing themselves in the real world, they learn by doing and spending time with experts.  Students actually practice skills and the characteristics of an entrepreneurial mindset through projects like this. This is truly the SUNY Ulster way.”
