The SUNY Ulster Music Department presents the 2022 Fall Concert Series

November 30, 2022 – December 8, 2022

November 16, 2022 – Stone Ridge, NY – SUNY Ulster will host its annual series of winter concerts beginning November 30, 2022. Students, music educators, and faculty and staff will perform in the following two holiday concerts. Both concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Quimby Theater in Vanderlyn Hall on the Stone Ridge Campus. The concerts are free and open to the public. Donations are greatly appreciated.

This invigorating annual concert directed by Vic Izzo will feature holiday favorites with songs including Let it Snow, Silent Night, and In the Bleak Midwinter. In addition, SUNY Ulster is thrilled to welcome Guest Conductor, Sue Lichtenberg who will be conducting the College/Community Band in their performance of Kilimanjaro.

SUNY Ulster Hosts Veterans Day Tribute on Thursday, November 10, 2022

November 7, 2022 – Stone Ridge, NY – SUNY Ulster will honor veterans on Thursday, November 10 at 10 a.m. in Clinton Hall on the Stone Ridge campus. Hosted by SUNY Ulster’s Student Government and the SUNY Ulster Military Affiliated Club, the event will include speakers, student reflections, and musical performances. This event is free and open to the public.

SUNY Ulster President, Dr. Alison Buckley will provide remarks. Manny Torres, Director of Military-Affiliated students and a student from the SUNY Ulster Student Government will speak. Students will share reflections and thoughts.

In addition, America (My Country Tis of Thee) will be performed by SUNY Ulster students, Hannah Irwin, Penelope Rose, Mark LaBorde, and Daniel Palladino. Danny Boy will be performed by Mark LaBorde.

SUNY Ulster has, for over a decade, been designated as a Top Military-Friendly School and has earned a Gold designation for the College’s commitment to veterans and veteran dependents. November 4, 2022 – Stone Ridge, NY – The SUNY Ulster Enrollment & Success Center invites you to the Stone Ridge campus to learn about the Arts programs at SUNY Ulster as well as Financial Aid.

During Discover the Arts, prospective students are invited to participate in an optional Portfolio Review of their work and preview a SUNY Ulster Student Works Showcase. The schedule includes a presentation about the Fine Arts Program, a Student Works Showcase, and an Application Workshop. Art Area Tours featuring the Gallery, Print Shop, Mac Lab, Mac Studio, and Inner Space. Registration is required .

During Financial Aid Day, SUNY Ulster will offer area high school seniors with plans to attend any SUNY school in fall 2023 with hands-on assistance completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). SUNY Ulster’s Admissions staff will also be available to speak with those interested in learning more about SUNY Ulster and its programs. Campus tours will be offered. Registration is required. To complete the FAFSA with a SUNY Ulster specialist, bring the following:

Federal Student Aid ID and Passwords for parent and student. Register for an FSA ID at studentaid.gov.
2021 Tax documents including your federal and state tax returns, W-2 statements, and other income statements
2021 untaxed income information, such as child support paid or received

October 25, 2022 – Stone Ridge, NY – Join us on Tuesday, November 8 at 1:15 p.m. in the Quimby Theater for the Herbert H. & Sofia P. Reuner Library Writers Series event with author, Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah.

A discussion and interview will be moderated by Dr. Ivan Godfrey, Associate Professor in the Criminal Justice & Human Services department. Adjei-Brenyah will read from some of his works, and participate in a Q&A session with the audience. A book signing will follow and books will be available for sale.

Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah is the New York Times-bestselling author of Friday Black (Mariner Books, 2018). His debut novel, Chain-Gang All-Stars, is forthcoming in 2023 with Penguin Random House.

Adjei-Brenyah’s books are described by award-winning author, George Saunders as “a wonder: strange, crazed, urgent and funny, yet classical.” And, BuzzFeed writes,

Muroff-Kotler Visual Arts Gallery at SUNY Ulster Presents ‘Guiding the Currents’ works of Marieken Cochius from October 7 through November 29, 2022

October 24, 2022 – Stone Ridge, NY – The Muroff-Kotler Visual Arts Gallery begins its fall season with an exhibition of the works of Marieken Cochius entitled, Guiding the Currents running from October 7 through November 29, 2022. A reception is scheduled for Friday November 4, from 4 to 6 p.m. The event is free and is open to the public.

Marieken Cochius’ works are described as meditative, intuitive and often explores growth forms, movement of light and wind, root systems, and animal architecture. The exhibition will include; sculpture, drawings, and paintings.

Marieken Cochius is a Dutch-born artist currently residing in the Hudson Valley. Cochius is recognized for her features in the New York Times, Elle Decor, Columbia Journal, and in over 40 Art/Literary/Poetry/University publications and magazines in the USA and abroad. Many of Cochius’ works have been shown in group exhibitions in local galleries such as Holland Tunnel Gallery, Newburgh, NY and the Lockwood Gallery, Kingston, NY.

Lecture Speaker on November 2 at 7 PM

October 17, 2022 – Stone Ridge, NY – Dr. John Rayburn will present a lecture on Local and Regional Glacial History at the End of the Last Ice Age as SUNY Ulster’s 2022 John Burroughs Natural Science Lecturer on November 2, 2022 at 7 p.m. in the Captain Jack Rose Memorial Lecture Hall (BUR 120).

For those who follow Hudson Valley history and geology, this lecture will provide an overview of the long geologic history of the Hudson Valley. Learn how a few thousand years ago, during the Pleistocene Ice Age, all of the Hudson Valley was covered with a thick sheet of glacial ice that as the climate began to warm exposed the landscape we know and love today. Dr. Rayburn will reveal how researchers are able to unravel the complex history of this process.

Dr. Rayburn is a professor in the SUNY New Paltz Geology Department where he specializes in geomorphology and environmental geology. His professional research interests include the examination of post-glacial lake sediments and the timing of deglaciation in the Hudson Valley and eastern New York.

The John Burroughs Natural Science Lecture Series is named in honor of the renowned local naturalist, John Burroughs and is sponsored by SUNY Ulster’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) department. The series seeks to periodically bring speakers to the SUNY Ulster campus, offering free lectures to the academic community and the general public on topics of interest in the natural sciences.

New Virtual Reality Training System just launched at SUNY Ulster.

An interactive first responder training system that uses virtual reality to simulate situations in which students can practice de-escalation and crisis intervention techniques was just launched at SUNY Ulster.

The simulator allows students to experience real-life police and mental health situations, making them better prepared for their careers. The equipment is programmed for a wide variety of conditions in which students can gain experience in de-escalating potentially violent situations, crisis and mental illness interventions, communication-building, emergency operations, suicidal persons, ambushes, and more.

As the country and our region are calling on more thoughtful police and mental health practices, this simulator will provide much-needed practice for students, giving them experience even before beginning their careers.

The Criminal Justice fund in Memory of William J. and Elizabeth R. Weishaupt, Sr. was founded in March of 2022 at Ulster Community College Foundation. The Weishaupts placed great emphasis on education and believed in the availability of higher education to our local community. The Weishaupt’s four sons chose to go into public service in law enforcement on both local and federal levels so the desire to use the funds towards excellence in Police Academy training was of interest to them.

The virtual reality simulator is installed and newly in use at the Kingston Center of SUNY Ulster on Mary’s St. with the goal it provides life-altering positive outcomes for our students and community members by elevating the public perception of and confidence in our law enforcement and mental health professionals.

Kingston Center of SUNY Ulster Fall 2022 Open House on August 10 to Showcase In-Demand Career Programs

Modern Cut-and-Sew Program and Presentation on the History of Textile Manufacturing in the Hudson Valley Among Newest Offerings

July 27, 2022 – Kingston, NY – The Continuing and Professional Education department of SUNY Ulster is holding an Open House on August 10 from 4-7 pm. It will highlight many of the career programs and courses offered this fall including a new Cut and Sew microcredential.

The Cut and Sew program is ideal for those who want to start their own business or work for one of many Cut and Sew manufacturers in the Hudson Valley. Included will be a presentation by The Reher Center on their Kingston Sews display as well as a display by local Cut and Sew manufacturing company, Community Manufacturing Solutions.

The CNC Operator microcredential was created in response to the need for skilled CNC operators in the Hudson Valley. Working with The Arc Mid-Hudson, this program is inclusive of those in the community with Level I Autism. Comprised of two courses offered this fall: Fundamentals of Metrology and CNC Fundamentals, students will have the opportunity to earn a Haas Certification as well as the CNC Operator microcredential badge within only four months. Brian Healy, Director of Behavioral Health Services at the Arc Mid-Hudson will speak and answer questions that parents or students may have about the program.

NYSDOL registered apprentices and those already working in the manufacturing field can find out about courses to advance their careers.

CASAC instructor, Lisa Babb will present from 5-6 pm on the CASAC program starting this September. Included will be an overview of the course material and OASAS requirements to practice in NYS.

A free GED class will be held from 5-6 pm and again from 6-7 pm for those looking to try a class before registering. Instructor Joann Dayton-Wolf will be available to answer questions about the program.

A free English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) class will be held from 5-6 pm and again from 6-7 pm for those who would like to sample a class before enrolling.

Many scholarships and grants are available to enable those in the community to train for a manufacturing career at little to no cost. Courses include CNC Programmer, CNC Operator, Advanced CNC, Fundamental Concepts of Metrology, Certified Production Technician, and Electrical Theory. Barbara Ann Livermore Reer, Assistant Dean for Workforce will be on hand to discuss scholarships and answer questions.

Program Coordinators will be on hand to assist potential students with questions on programs and registration for fall courses.

SUNY Ulster Alumni Add Innovative New Classes to Art Department Curriculum

June 23, 2022 – Stone Ridge, NY – Curatorial Studies and Music of the World are two new classes being introduced at SUNY Ulster for fall 2022. Taught by arts department alumni Allison Constant ‘09 and Paul Chambers ‘11, both courses provide an introduction to their topics with hands-on experience.

Curatorial Studies address all aspects of curating a contemporary art exhibition using the College’s Muroff-Kotler Visual Arts Gallery as the classroom. Local artists together with students will research, discuss, reflect, and analyze information and works of art. Students will participate in artist studio visits, image collection and management, exhibition planning and layout, promotion and social media, and the organization of an exhibiting arts lecture and educational programming for students and community members. Students will also visit local galleries, museums, and art events and engage with the local art community. The culmination of this class will be an exhibition in the Muroff-Kotler Visual Arts Gallery.

Allison Constant graduated from SUNY Ulster with an Associate’s degree in Fine Arts/Visual Arts in 2009 and continued her studies at SUNY New Paltz where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Art degree in both Painting and Drawing and Photography. She is the owner and founder of ARTBAR Gallery in Kingston where she has curated over 100 exhibitions. Allison loves the challenge of creating exhibits that are visually thoughtful with the viewers’ perspective in mind and is excited to share her skills and experiences as a curator and gallerist in the upcoming Curatorial Studies class.

Music of the World is an introduction to the concepts of ethnomusicology. It encompasses a range of musical styles from nonwestern regions of the world including Africa, East Asia, and the Middle East. An emphasis is placed on learning to perform and listen to various genres that will lead to an understanding of how music reflects influences from culture and society. Traditional instruments will be incorporated into the class as students learn to understand the cultural significance of music and how geography and historical events contribute to musical development.

Paul Chambers graduated from SUNY Ulster in 2011 with an Associate’s degree in Music. He then attained his Bachelor’s degree in music education and Master’s degree in percussion performance from SUNY Fredonia. In addition to his role as an adjunct instructor at SUNY Ulster, he is ensemble director of the championship-winning Arlington High School Marching Band and Winter Percussion Ensemble. He is in demand as a performer throughout the Hudson Valley in a variety of professional orchestras, musical theater organizations, and jazz ensembles, including principal positions with the Woodstock Symphony Orchestra and Woodstock Playhouse.

Other performance highlights include being selected as a member of the International Marimba Orchestra for the 2021 Percussive Arts Society International Convention. He won a position in the inaugural World Percussion Group of 2016, which is an ensemble, conceived to give wide-reaching exposure and experience to the most promising up-and-coming percussionists around the world. He is an avid performer, researcher, and clinician of traditional African music. He studied abroad in Ghana on three separate occasions and, in 2016, was awarded a Fulbright grant to document and study traditional music in South Africa. The resulting research is published in the academic journal, African Music.
