Students & Future Students Try On Careers Via Virtual Reality at SUNY Ulster

November 9, 2023 – Stone Ridge, NY – The New York State Division of Employment and Workforce Solutions was on the Stone Ridge campus with a new virtual reality platform that gives students and future students a glimpse into the day-to-day work their academic program choices bring.

Too often, students choose an academic path without understanding the actual careers that path leads to. For example, a student might decide to pursue a degree in advanced manufacturing without knowing what kind of job and job responsibilities are associated with that career. Career Exploration 2.0 allows advanced manufacturing students to ‘try on’ a job within that field by putting them right on the job site. The virtual reality program enables learners to discover a wide array of career possibilities so they can make more informed choices about their future.

Participating in this event were current students and high school students who have been awarded a President’s Challenge Scholarship from the Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc. Thanks to the generosity of sponsors from our local community and beyond, this program assists first-generation Ulster County high school students with overcoming financial barriers associated with attending college. Students are identified in the eighth grade by their sponsoring school district and receive mentoring and college readiness support through the completion of high school. Upon graduation, students are able to attend SUNY Ulster tuition-free for two years.  Today, over 250 scholarships have been awarded with 200 students participating.

The virtual reality career simulations were chosen to reflect some of the academic programs offered at SUNY Ulster including:

  • Registered Nurse – Students help an emergency room patient
  • Solar Technician – Students participate in installing a solar panel on a home
  • Network Administrator – Students fix an app service outage
  • Manufacturing – Students have to find the contaminated microchips

SUNY Ulster’s President’s Challenge Scholarship recipients, approximately 250 students from all nine Ulster County School Districts in grades 9 – 12, and our college community were able to take advantage of virtual reality career exploration scenarios through the New York State Division of Employment and Workforce Solutions demonstrations on the Stone Ridge Campus. Connecting students to discover their career pathways and exposing them to workforce and educational opportunities with technology is exciting and adds an element of fun when thinking of their futures.”

Nursing & Vet Tech Info Sessions for Those Interested in a Career Helping People or Pets

October 26, 2023 – Stone Ridge, NY – Join us on the Stone Ridge Campus of SUNY Ulster to learn about the Nursing and Vet Tech programs, the admission process, financial aid, scholarships, and the rewarding careers that graduates of these programs are building.

The Vet Tech info session takes place on Tuesday, November 7 from 4-5 p.m. The Nursing info session takes place on Thursday, November 16 from 4-5 p.m. Both info sessions meet in the Mountain View Room of the Macdonald DeWitt Library. Prospective students will find these info sessions are a great way to connect with each program’s faculty and tour the facilities.

The next start date for both of these programs is January 22, 2024.

SUNY Ulster Marks the Installation of Alison Buckley, Ed.D. as Seventh President

October 2, 2023 – Stone Ridge, NY – SUNY Ulster marks an inspiring new chapter in its history with the formal Installation this past Thursday of its seventh President, Alison Buckley, Ed.D. A significant moment in the proud history of the College, this event allowed our community to unite for a common purpose and to envision the possibilities for the future of accessible higher education for Ulster County residents.

The ceremony drew educational, government, and community leaders together as members of the platform party and featured remarks from SUNY Chancellor, Dr. John B. King, Jr.; Ulster County Executive, Jen Metzger, Ulster County Legislative Chair, Tracey Bartels, and President Emeritus of Connecticut State Colleges and Universities, Dr. David Levinson, among others. Colleges and universities throughout the Hudson Valley and the U.S. sent delegates to represent their institutions, and the audience was filled with the SUNY Ulster Board of Trustees, members of the Ulster Community College Foundation Board of Directors, faculty, staff, alumni, friends, family, and well-wishers.

SUNY Ulster Associate Professor Stephen Balantzian, Chair of the Arts Department, presided over the ceremony, and congratulatory greetings were shared by Deborah Briggs, Chair of the SUNY Ulster Board of Trustees, Kamlesh Baral, Student Government Organization President, Matthew Goodell, Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Academic Senate Chair, Kari Mack, Director of Library Services, and Laurel Sweeney, Chair of the Foundation Board of Directors.

In her remarks, President Buckley cited SUNY Ulster as an economic engine.  “Community college graduates are more likely to be fully employed in jobs with a family-sustaining wage. They are more likely to fill the mid-level jobs that drive labor market growth. They are more likely to own their own home, volunteer in our community, and vote.” One of her goals is to target those who live in poverty in Ulster County as well as the 59,000 who have graduated high school but have no post-secondary degree.

The College’s 60th anniversary of classes was September 23, 2023, and celebrations and events will be held throughout the academic year to commemorate this milestone.  President Buckley shared during her address, “As we celebrate 60 years, I think of the dreams realized, the careers launched, the families changed.”

SUNY Chancellor John B. King, Jr. said, “Dr. Alison Buckley is a champion of community colleges and truly understands how integral they are to the communities they serve. In the sixty years since it first opened, SUNY Ulster has served more than 400,000 students. In the year that Dr. Buckley has served as president, she has earned a reputation for thoughtful leadership, collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving. Her accomplished career serving successfully in key leadership roles in community colleges has prepared her well to ensure SUNY Ulster will continue to be a bastion of upward mobility, economic development, and student success.”

President Buckley assumed office in July 2022. Before being appointed president, she served as the Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs for Connecticut State Community Colleges, where she established and directed the strategic enrollment management division for the state’s community colleges. During her time there, she served thirteen campuses with approximately 50,000 students. Some of her accomplishments include leading the state-wide Guided Pathways reforms, including the implementation of a holistic advising model; the establishment of the first community college strategic enrollment management plan; completing the organizational design of a single enrollment management and student affairs division in advance of the community college merger; successfully completing the New England Commission for Higher Education substantive change process to merge the colleges into a single institution, and working closely with the United States Department of Education on the technical components of the merger.

The installation ceremony was the capstone of a week-long series of events marking the celebration, including an Alumni Hall of Fame induction, the Ulster Community College Foundation Gala, Academic Showcases, and a campus-wide barbecue.

SUNY Ulster Holds Police Basic Training Information Session October 14, 2023

September 27, 2023 – Stone Ridge, NY – SUNY Ulster has scheduled an information session for those interested in attending its Police Academy on Saturday, October 14, 2023 at 10 a.m. This information session is mandatory for anyone registering for the Police Academy. The information session will be held at the Kingston Center of SUNY Ulster at 94 Mary’s Ave. in Kingston as well as online via Zoom.

The Police Basic Training program will begin on January 6, 2024 and will run in the evenings Monday through Thursday from 6 to 10 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. At the info session, those interested will learn about academic requirements, physical fitness, regulations, and more. Full program information including costs, financial aid, and application steps can be found on the SUNY Ulster website.

SUNY Ulster Launches Paths to Success, Alumni Panel Series
A Path to a Career in Law Scheduled for September 29 at 11 am

September 18, 2023 – Stone Ridge, NY – A series of career-specific alumni panel discussions are scheduled throughout the year to offer advice, insights, and inspiration to current students and community members considering future career choices. Participants will be able to hear career stories from a small group of graduates from their initial career choice, and their educational experiences to their reflections on their career journey since graduation.

A Path to a Career in Law, scheduled for September 29th at 11 a.m. in the College Lounge on the Stone Ridge campus is the first in this series. The alumni panel is comprised of regional lawyers with varying specialties and a judge:

SUNY Ulster Offers Credentialed Alcoholism & Substance Abuse Counselor Training

SUNY Ulster Offers Training in Credentialed Alcoholism & Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) beginning September 11

August 28, 2023 – Kingston, NY – SUNY Ulster’s Department of Continuing and Professional Education is offering Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor training this September. CASAC courses are all remote and Section I: Basic Knowledge of Alcoholism & Substance Abuse begins Monday, September 11.

The CASAC Program curriculum is approved by New York State’s Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS). Upon completion, students are issued the OASAS 350 Hour Certificate of Completion, providing all the coursework necessary to apply for the CASAC Trainee status. In addition to providing the entire 350-hour training, SUNY Ulster’s program can be individualized for students who already possess approved hours through previous academic study. Renewal courses are also offered for those holding full CASAC credentials. A payment plan is available for students who wish to pay monthly.

With a projected 22 percent employment growth rate by 2031 in New York State, CASAC’s specialized clinicians are on the front lines helping in the recovery of those suffering with substance use disorders. CASACs fill a need in a wide variety of clinical settings and the relevance of their training extends to professionals working in schools, hospitals, human service advocacy agencies, and beyond.  SUNY Ulster has trained hundreds of CASAC counselors through a curriculum that addresses diagnostic assessment, evaluation, intervention, referral, alcoholism, and substance abuse counseling in both individual and group settings.

National Higher Education Equity Expert and Author, Tia Brown McNair

August 28, 2023 – Stone Ridge, NY – To kick-off SUNY Ulster’s 2023-2024 academic year, SUNY Ulster President, Alison Buckley, Ed.D., invited Dr. Tia Brown McNair, Vice President in the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Student Success and Executive Director for the Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation (TRHT) Campus Centers at the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) in Washington, DC, to join the College community for professional development and engagement centered on equity and purposeful action.

Focusing on Am I a Student-Ready Leader? Vision, Purpose, and Practice for Student Success, McNair highlighted promising strategies for designing and leading student success efforts that are guided by the question, “What does it mean to be a student-ready leader, and why does it matter?” The goal is for SUNY Ulster to promote a shared vision with a defined purpose that translates into practices that are relevant, transparent, and effective for our students who represent a diversity of identities.

“I am honored to have Dr. Tia Brown McNair join us as our keynote speaker.  I know she will help our institution focus our work this academic year on strategic planning, accreditation and diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice, through the examination of: Are we doing the right thing?; Are we doing it well?; and Why does it matter?, said, Alison Buckley, Ed.D., President.

SUNY Ulster’s community of faculty and staff had access to two of McNair’s publications, “From Equity Talk to Equity Walk: Expanding Practitioner Knowledge for Racial Justice in Higher Education” and “Becoming a Student Ready College: A New Culture of Leadership for Student Success,” for advanced reading and reflections.

Following her address, college-wide discussion groups reviewed key principles from the second edition of Becoming a Student-Ready College and From Equity Talk to Equity Walk. Faculty and staff then identified key steps for examining and establishing equity-centered goals that support student engagement, retention, and success.

As the College enters its 60th anniversary year this September, utilizing Dr. McNair’s work among our resources for strategic planning as we plan for the growth and future of the College will provide a wealth of information in the area of DEI and facilitate more robust conversations with colleagues.

President Buckley stated, “SUNY Ulster serves as an important public higher education partner in Ulster County, and it is paramount that we meet the changing workforce needs in emerging industries by serving the citizens of Ulster County through upskilling and on and off-ramps to affordable access to higher education, leading to successful employment in a career with family-sustaining wages. We look forward to supporting students as they attain their educational degrees/certifications and meet their employment goals.”

SUNY Ulster Holds Fall 2023 Campus Connect Orientations this August for Incoming New Students

August 1, 2023 – Stone Ridge, NY – SUNY Ulster will hold three Campus Connect Orientations this August for all incoming new students including transfer students and students with some college. The orientation dates are Friday, August 18 from 9 am – 12 pm., and Monday, August 21 from 1 – 4 pm and will be held on the Stone Ridge Campus. The last orientation date will be held on Tuesday, August 22 from 5 – 8 pm at the Kingston Center of SUNY Ulster on 94 Mary’s Avenue in Kingston.

Campus Connect is an invaluable experience and provides students with the opportunity to become familiar with campus and all SUNY Ulster has to offer.  Join one of our Campus Connect Orientations and meet SUNY Ulster’s President, Alison Buckley, ED.D., and our Campus Connect Student Leaders. Enjoy a tour of the campus and learn some valuable information as you make connections with faculty, staff, and fellow students. July 31, 2023 – Kingston, NY – The Continuing and Professional Education department of SUNY Ulster is holding an Open House on Monday, August 14 from 4-7 pm at the Kingston Center of SUNY Ulster, 94 Mary’s Ave. All info sessions are free and open to the public. It will highlight many of the career programs and courses offered this fall.

Advanced Manufacturing Info Session – SUNY Ulster has developed a series of Microcredentials for those pursuing an advanced manufacturing career. These Microcredentials can be taken by those new to manufacturing or by those looking to gain a credential in a specific area. They are designed to embrace the neurodivergent population and prepare them for credentials and employment in the Advanced Manufacturing sector. Instructors will present how new technology is changing the skill set needed for those interested in an Advanced Manufacturing career. Join us for a question and answer period on how SUNY Ulster can help you achieve your career goals. Scholarships are available for this program, use our Online Application to apply.

Cut & Sew Info Session – Join us as we unveil our Cut and Sew Microcredential. This Microcredential consists of three courses; Commercial Sewing, Patternmaking, and Fit Analysis. These classes are perfect for those who want to become employed in one of the many Cut and Sew manufacturing companies located in the Hudson Valley as well as for those who want to start their own business. Certified Clinical Medical Info Session – Interested in a short-term Healthcare credential? Join us for an information session on our Certified Clinical Medical Assistant program. During this session we will give an overview of the program and highlight the skills taught. CASAC Info Session – For those interested in becoming an addictions counselor or for professionals who wish to specialize in addiction counseling, this session will address the training, education, and competencies needed.

High School Equivalency Diploma (GED) – Come and meet our instructors and learn about our comprehensive GED review classes designed for students wanting to earn their High School Equivalency Diploma.

Water & Wastewater Info Session – Information about careers in water and wastewater will be discussed. Courses offered for different operator certifications will be explained as well as the new pre-apprenticeship/apprenticeship program. Careers in this field are found locally with DEC, DEP, and local municipalities.

Many scholarships and grants are available to enable those in the community to train for a manufacturing career at little to no cost. Courses include CNC Programmer, CNC Operator, Advanced CNC, Fundamental Concepts of Metrology, Certified Production Technician, and Electrical Theory. Barbara Ann Livermore Reer, Assistant Dean for Workforce will be on hand to discuss scholarships and answer questions.

            Program Coordinators will be on hand to assist potential students with questions on programs and registration for fall courses.

Part-Time Dean’s List
