SUNY Ulster Holds On-Campus Prospective Students Day December  4

November 10, 2021 – Stone Ridge, NY – High school students and their support systems who want to learn more about the value of a community college education and the SUNY Ulster admissions process can register for Prospective Students Day. The event will take place on Saturday, December 4 starting at 9 a.m. on the Stone Ridge Campus.

The program for this event begins in Quimby Theater located in Vanderlyn Hall and will include:

  • An introduction to the SUNY Ulster campus and the admissions process
  • An overview of academic programs and college services including scholarships, financial   aid, and transferring to a four-year college
  • A Start Here, Go Far panel consisting of current students and alumni providing their college experience and perspective
  • A guided campus tour given by Student Admissions Ambassadors who will share experiences about campus life

All participants will receive a SUNY Ulster swag bag filled with helpful resources. There will also be the opportunity to schedule an individual follow-up appointment with a SUNY Ulster admissions representative to help guide students and answer questions.

SUNY Ulster Presents a Virtual Event with Author, Pam Houston

October 21, 2021 – Stone Ridge, NY – Registration is now open for the Herbert H. & Sofia P. Reuner Library Writers Series event with author Pam Houston via Zoom on Thursday, November 4 from 1:15 to 2:15 p.m.

The event, moderated by Kim Wozencraft, adjunct professor of English at SUNY Ulster and SUNY New Paltz, will include a reading, interview, and question and answer period. Ms. Wozencraft is the author of the novel Rush, which was adapted into a film.

Pam Houston is the author of two collections of linked short stories Cowboys Are My Weakness (1994), which was the winner of the 1993 Western States Book Award and has been translated into nine languages, and Waltzing the Cat (1999, reissued 2013), which won the Willa Award for Contemporary Fiction. She also authored two novels, Contents May Have Shifted (2012) and Sight Hound (2006), all published by W.W. Norton & Co.; and three collections of autobiographical essays, Deep Creek: Finding Hope in the High Country (2019), from which an essay will appear in the forthcoming Best American Travel Writing and another essay in the forthcoming Pushcart Prize anthology, A Rough Guide to the Heart (Virago, 2001), and A Little More About Me (Norton, 1999, reissued 2013).

Houston has also edited a collection of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry entitled Women on Hunting: Essays, Fiction, and Poetry (Ecco Press). She is the author of a stage play called “Tracking the Pleiades” and she has written the text for Men Before Ten A.M., a book of photographs by the French photographer Veronique Vialle.

Houston is a Professor of English at UC Davis, directs the literary nonprofit Writing By Writers, and teaches in The Pacific University low-residency MFA program and at writer’s conferences around the country and the world. She divides her time between Davis and southwestern Colorado at 9,000 feet above sea level near the headwaters of the Rio Grande.  Copies of Houston’s latest book, Deep Creek: Finding Hope in the High Country will be available for purchase online at the SUNY Ulster bookstore.

The SUNY Ulster Herbert H. & Sofia P. Reuner Library Writers Series is a special program that began in 1998 to bring renowned writers to campus every fall. It provides a unique opportunity for SUNY Ulster students and community members to hear award-winning authors read from their work. The series is co-sponsored by the Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc. and the Macdonald DeWitt Library.

SUNY Ulster Holds Ulster County Domestic Violence Information Forum:

9th annual ulster county domestic violence information forum flyer

October 18, 2021 – Stone Ridge, NY – SUNY Ulster, Ulster County Executive Patrick K. Ryan, and the Ulster County Inter-Agency Council on Domestic Violence & Human Trafficking will host “Hidden Truths and Youth” on Thursday, October 28, from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. via Zoom.

This year’s forum will identify and address domestic violence in the familial and intimate partner relationships of young people. A Q&A Discussion will follow a variety of presentations from local organizations and local community leaders.

This is the 9th Annual Ulster County Domestic Violence Information Forum. These forums are held each October as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month and include information and resources for campus and community members on domestic violence

Registration Opens for Online Winter*net Courses at SUNY Ulster

October 14, 2021 – Stone Ridge, NY – SUNY Ulster’s Winter*net session, which begins December 27 and runs through January 18, offers three-week online courses that allow SUNY Ulster and visiting students the ability to earn credits quickly and affordably.

Winter offerings include popular general education required classes and electives in the sciences, business, history, humanities, languages, and more at a cost of $190 per credit in-state tuition.

The online format and accelerated class schedule can help students get a jump-start on their spring semester, complete a required course, or explore a new area of interest.

Admissions Virtual Info Sessions: Held throughout the fall, these virtual info sessions are held from 4-5 p.m. via Zoom and covers a broad look at all SUNY Ulster has to offer.

One-on-One Admissions Virtual Appointments: Ideal for anyone who needs more personalized information and has specific questions to ask.

Campus Tour Tuesdays: Held on the Stone Ridge campus, these tours are scheduled from 3-4 p.m. Participants will visit academic buildings, student dining areas, library, bookstore, gymnasium, and more.

Nursing Program Virtual Information Sessions: Topics for these Zoom sessions include the application process, admission requirements, the curriculum, and the required pre-entrance exam.

Veterinary Technology Program Virtual Information Sessions: Topics for these Zoom sessions include the application process, vet tech requirements, curriculum, technical standards for admission, and the HESI Admission Assessment Exam.

September 21, 2021 – Kingston, NY – SUNY Ulster invites the regional community to a Career Exploration Expo at the Kingston Center on 94 Mary’s Ave. on October 16. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. No registration is required.

This one-day event is organized for job seekers, career changers, and college-bound high school students. It is an opportunity to get your resume reviewed, have a professional headshot taken, learn about training & academic programs, discover financial support options, and connect with companies and temp agencies looking to hire.

Companies from around the region in fields such as manufacturing, health and medical services, the arts, technology, and more will be on site including Markertek, Children’s Home of Kingston, Greystone Programs, Ellenville Regional Hospital, Global Foundries, The Arc Mid-Hudson, Archcare at Ferncliff Nursing Home, WineRacks.com, Inc., NYCDEP Bureau of Water Supply, and the Ulster County Office of Employment & Training.

SUNY Ulster Hosts 9/11 Remembrance

August 31, 2021 – Stone Ridge, NY – SUNY Ulster invites the community to join its campus community in commemorating the 20th anniversary of 9/11.

On Friday, September 10, SUNY Ulster will post a Virtual Remembrance Ceremony that will be accessible via the Internet on the College’s YouTube and Facebook Channels. This prerecorded virtual presentation will include remarks from Dr. Alan P. Roberts, SUNY Ulster President; Vice President Kevin Stoner, Professor Ray Raymond, Reverend Dr. Allison Moore of The Pantry at SUNY Ulster, Meg Sheeley, Dean of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs, and SUNY Ulster student government leaders. It will also include a musical performance by SUNY Ulster alumni, Marena Clunie and Alex Herrling.

On Saturday, September 11 at 12:45 p.m. on the SUNY Ulster soccer field, a live commemoration will take place. It will begin with the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard Presenting the Colors, and the National Anthem and America the Beautiful sung by Alumna Marena Clunie. It will be followed by a ceremonial gift exchange from the SUNY Ulster Women’s and Men’s Soccer teams to the visiting team from Albany College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences. There will be a moment of silence, guest bagpiper Scott Benson, Hudson Valley Bagpipe, a SUNY Ulster alumnus will play Amazing Grace, and the colors will then be retired.

At 1 p.m., SUNY Ulster’s Women’s Soccer will play against Albany College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences.

At 3 p.m., SUNY Ulster’s Men’s Soccer will play against Albany College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences.

This event is free and open to the public. Visitors attending the event need to check in at the Senate Gym upon arrival where they will complete screening questions and be issued a wristband. All employees and students are required to complete a daily health screening that is accessed through the SUNY Ulster Portal.

              SUNY Ulster is requiring face masks throughout campus facilities and grounds regardless of vaccination status. Social distancing for spectators is also highly encouraged during the event. Anyone with signs or symptoms of infectious illness should stay home when sick and/or seek medical care.

Call for Entries for an Alumni Art Exhibition

August 11, 2021 – Stone Ridge, NY – SUNY Ulster’s Department of Fine and Visual Arts announces a call for entries for its Alumni Art Exhibition scheduled for October 1 through November 14, 2021. All alumni are eligible and the deadline to submit is August 27, 2021.

Open to all SUNY Ulster alumni- not just Art Majors! Works must have been completed after graduation, preferably within the last three years.  All media is acceptable and alumni can submit up to three pieces.

Joan Ffolliott, a member of the SUNY Ulster faculty is the juror. Joan Ffolliott began her formal artistic training at the University of Washington in sculpture and printmaking. She went on to earn her MFA at the Rhode Island School of Design and was the recipient of a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant.

She has exhibited her work in numerous shows around the country and she is included in many private collections. In addition to teaching at SUNY Ulster and the Woodstock School of Art, Joan taught at RISD. The owner of Ffolliott Design, she lives and works in Malden-on-Hudson, New York.

Continuing Education Holds Virtual Open House August 12

August 4, 2021 – Kingston, NY – The Career and Continuing Education department of SUNY Ulster is holding its Open House on August 12 via Zoom to highlight in-demand careers.

Training Programs covered include:

  • Advanced Manufacturing
  • Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC)
  • Green Careers Academy
  • Clinical Medical Assistant

These virtual sessions will cover program information, how to apply, information on the potential for tuition assistance, and more. All info sessions are scheduled conveniently for after the workday.

Those interested can register for one or all of the different virtual sessions. Once registered, participants will receive Zoom information via email for accessing each info session.

Building Electrification Microcredential to Help Fill Local Employment Opportunities

July 28, 2021 – Kingston, NY – SUNY Ulster announces a new part-time Microcredential in Building for those looking to start a career or add to their skills in green building.  Starting on August 30, this one-year credential consists of four courses delivered via webinar, site visits, and one Applied Learning course offered in spring 2022.

This microcredential was developed to help local employers find needed skilled workers. It will train technicians, engineers, and managers to gain knowledgeable insight into high-efficiency heating, solar panels, and building systems automation found in both large and small buildings throughout the Hudson Valley.

Courses for this microcredential include:

  • GRB 260 Green HVAC
  • GRB 230 Commercial Electrical
  • GRB 210 Building Automation Controls
  • GRB 250 Troubleshooting Green Building Systems
  • GRB 280 Applied Learning

A high school diploma is required to start this program. Those with HVAC training or who are mechanical/electrical technicians are encouraged to add this micro-credential to their resume. This micro-credential is also stackable into the Green Building AAS program at SUNY Ulster.
