🌟Faculty Spotlight: Mkajuma Mbogho🌟
I was born and raised in a rural village in Kenya. I earned my Master’s in Biology from The City University of New York before returning to teach at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. Later, I received a World Bank scholarship to pursue a Ph.D. and returned to New York City, completing my Biology doctorate at CUNY Graduate Center in 2000.

Although I initially planned to return to Kenya, I chose to stay for professional experience. I taught microbiology at SUNY Sullivan for three years and as an adjunct at SUNY Ulster in the summer of 2003. Seeing my potential, Biology Chair Dr. Ordansky encouraged me to apply for a full-time role, and I joined SUNY Ulster as full-time faculty in January 2004.

My students give me a reason to be excited about what I do. It is truly a privilege for me to be part of their life’s journey, and I have learned a lot from them, just as they have learned from me. I love to teach and watch my students grow.

I have found tremendous support in the department and the college-wide community. SUNY Ulster embodies the values of “it takes a village to raise a child”. I have found a community of faculty and staff that truly cares about our students and for one another. I enjoy teaching biology, I love my students and I feel very privileged to work with so many wonderful people. I can’t believe I have been walking the Hardenbergh and Burroughs halls for over 20 years!

I began the Books for Kenya project when I noticed valuable but unused books in offices. I collected and shipped them to benefit students and faculty in Kenya, with generous support from the SUNY Ulster community, library staff, faculty, non-teaching staff, Kingston Rotary Club, and Plattekill Reformed Church. Though high shipping costs have made it difficult to continue, I’m deeply grateful for everyone’s support.

I can truly say, if I should retire tomorrow, I have no regrets for choosing SUNY Ulster!

💡 Inspiring Future College Students!
Today, we had the joy of welcoming 5th-grade students from Ellenville Central School District to SUNY Ulster! 🎉
Their day was packed with discovery as they toured the campus with our fantastic Enrollment & Success Team, visited the Senate Gymnasium, explored creativity in the Muroff Kotler Visual Arts Gallery, and experienced student life in the Student Life Center.
The hands-on learning continued with an engaging session with Assistant Professor Mark Stewart, followed by some gooey fun making slime with Lisa Bonesteel, our Laboratory/Chemical Safety Coordinator, in our science lab! 🧪🔬
We loved having these eager learners on campus and look forward to seeing them again in the future! 🌟💙

🌟Staff Spotlight: Samm Chambers 🌟
My journey into higher education has been anything but traditional, shaped by my upbringing on Long Island with two incredibly dedicated teacher parents. From a young age, I knew I wanted to teach, and in 6th grade, I decided that music would be my path. I earned my Bachelor’s in Music Education from SUNY Fredonia and a Master’s in Euphonium Performance from Rutgers University .

While at Rutgers, I was an assistant to the Coordinator of Undergraduate Music. I loved connecting with students during events like Open House, Audition Days, and Orientation, an experience that sparked my desire to shift into higher education.

My opportunity to make that leap came when I joined SUNY Ulster as a part-time student services representative in March 2022. About two months later, I moved into a full-time Enrollment and Success Center (ESC) position where I had the opportunity to work with the Student Government, advise the music club, and help with campus-wide events. I moved into my current Assistant Dean of Student Affairs role in September 2023.

Everyday, I feel proud of the work I do alongside my amazing colleagues to enhance the student experience. In this role, I get to wear many hats, and it feels incredibly rewarding to make an impact in students’ lives. All the while, I still have music in my life! I play with the Ulster College/Community Band, the African Music Ensemble (that my husband directs!), and the “Wednesdays@1:00” Convocations. During the summer, you can also find me playing in the pit orchestra at the Woodstock Playhouse!

In my downtime, I’m pursuing another master’s degree in higher education at the University at Albany, SUNY, reading, and spending quality time with my wonderful husband and our dog, Geno.

Faculty Spotlight: Marielle Rosola

🌟Faculty Spotlight: Marielle Rosola 🌟
Marielle's journey to becoming an assistant professor of nursing is one defined by resilience, growth, and an unwavering commitment to making a difference in healthcare. A proud High Falls native and SUNY Ulster alumna, Marielle’s path was shaped early on by a deep connection to her community. As a senior at Rondout Valley Central School District, she took her first steps toward higher education at SUNY Ulster, where she not only excelled academically but also made her mark as a student aide in the theater department. Graduating with honors and an Associate of Science in Liberal Arts, she laid the foundation for a career that would continually evolve in pursuit of knowledge and service.

Marielle earned her Business Management degree cum laude from SUNY New Paltz before managing a construction company. Drawn to caregiving, she became a licensed esthetician and massage therapist, offering services at Mohonk Mountain House and throughout the Hudson Valley.

Desiring to delve deeper, Marielle returned to SUNY Ulster to pursue nursing. She graduated with her Associate of Science Degree and achieved RN licensure in 2015. Marielle spent over four years as a staff nurse at HealthAlliance Hospital of the Hudson Valley, refining her skills and building strong patient connections. Determined to make a greater impact, she earned her BSN and MSN in Nursing Education from Chamberlain University, graduating with a 4.0 GPA.

As an Assistant Professor of Nursing, Marielle blends her expertise in business, holistic wellness, and nursing to bridge compassionate care with academic rigor. Committed to the Hudson Valley, she inspires future nurses in both the classroom and hospital, striving to improve patient outcomes and guide students toward purposeful service.

Faculty Spotlight: Ashley Hajba

🌟Faculty Spotlight: Ashley Hajba 🌟
I grew up in Stone Ridge and am a SUNY Ulster graduate. I was impressed not only by the education I received here but by the kindness of the faculty and staff and all the support offered as well. As an Assistant Professor of Mathematics here many years later, I am happy to confirm that that kindness and support remain, and not only for students but new faculty as well!

I've also worked as a tutor in the Patrik Math Center, as an EOP math tutor, and as the UPK Teacher at the preschool on campus, and have enjoyed getting to work with so many across the campus community.

I received my Master of Science in Education degree from SUNY New Paltz with a concentration in STEM. I have always loved math and wanted to help others see the beauty in it as well. I can recognize that not everyone shares the same passion for the subject as me, but I aim to convince everyone that they CAN be successful at math, appreciate its patterns, learn to think critically and use it to improve their lives and community.

My favorite moments as a professor are when students start to believe in themselves and their ability and can identify math in the "real world". It's important to me that students do well in class and leave my class a more informed, confident learner and citizen.

I love spending time outdoors camping, hiking, kayaking, bouldering, etc. I enjoy photographing animals, reading, and sushi.

SUNY Ulster Spotlight: Barbara Ann Livermore R

🌟SUNY Ulster Spotlight: Barbara Ann Livermore Reer 🌟
Assistant Dean for Workforce, Career Development, and Apprenticeship Initiatives, Barbara Ann Livermore Reer, BSEE, recently celebrated 22 years of creating innovative career pathways in technology fields at SUNY Ulster.

She has led the SUNY Workforce Team in creating stackable microcredentials, delivering Related Instruction training for Apprentices, and securing more than $2.3M to support manufacturing training. Barbara was instrumental in the vision for The Pfeiffer Technology and Innovation Lab, which houses many of the STEM programs, the development of the AOS in Advanced Manufacturing Technology, the vision, and creation of an inclusive manufacturing program for Autistic and Neurodivergent students, and is a leader in developing credit/non-credit blended classrooms resulting in non-credit to credit equivalency pathways.

In 2021, her team was awarded the Future of Work – Mid-Hudson Region manufacturing grant for $1.2M, and she currently leads the Hudson Valley SUNY Community Colleges in advancing manufacturing training on the regional level.

Barbara has written and presented on The Changing Face of Technical Career Pathways in Higher Education, It’s All in the Package: Developing Successful Career Programs, Collaboration and Partnerships to Develop Innovative Green Programs.

She was awarded the 2019 Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service and the 2019 Krembs Family Innovation Award. Most recently, she was awarded the 2024 Manufacturing Champion Award from the @councilofindustry. Barbara advises the Students for Life Club at SUNY Ulster and has served as a mentor to students pursuing degrees.

Her dedication to education, mentorship, and workforce development has empowered countless students to pursue success in high-demand fields. We honor her commitment and leadership. Thank you, Barbara!

🌟 Women’s History Month Spotlight: Saida Faqirzada 🌟
Saida is a results-driven Program Coordinator for CASAC, Allied Health, and Healthcare at SUNY Ulster in the Continuing Education Program, and is committed to empowering students and communities through innovative programs. As a primary student contact, she provides guidance and support to ensure a fulfilling experience by collaborating with faculty to align the curriculum with industry standards, managing budgets to maximize opportunities, and organizing events to enhance engagement.

She is also committed to community development, using her expertise in HR, project management, and stakeholder engagement to drive initiatives that empower individuals and businesses. From launching resource centers to leading training programs, her work has enhanced skills, expanded opportunities, and fostered lasting community impact. Saida has a Master’s Degree in Business and a Bachelor’s in Economics from Kardan University.
