SUNY Ulster Hosts Annual “Future Voices” Art Exhibit Showcasing Local High School Talent

March 12, 2026 – Stone Ridge, NY – Ulster County high school students will be showcased in an exhibit of their artwork with “Future Voices 2026: High School Art from Ulster County,” opening March 26 and running through April 16 at the Muroff Kotler Visual Arts Gallery on the Stone Ridge campus. The opening reception will be held on Thursday, March 26, from 4 – 6 p.m.

This annual exhibition features artwork from high school students throughout Ulster County. Participating schools include Saugerties, Onteora, Rondout Valley, Kingston, Ulster BOCES, New Paltz, Ellenville, Marlboro, Highland, and Wallkill. The show will include a wide variety of media including painting, drawing, photography, ceramics, sculpture, digital media, and more.

 The exhibition is being curated by Allison Constant, owner and founder of Art Bar in Kingston. Ms. Constant is a SUNY Ulster fine art program alumna. In addition to her work at Art Bar, she has curated exhibits for the Woodstock Artists Association and Museum and Woodstock Jewish Congregation. She has also exhibited her own work at The Farber Center in New York City, Samuel Dorsky Museum at SUNY New Paltz, and The Shirt Factory in Kingston, among others.

The Muroff Kotler Visual Arts Gallery is open Tuesday through Friday 12:30 – 3 p.m. It is closed on college holidays, weekends, and spring break, March 16 – 20. Press Release: Black Excellence A Legacy in Color

January 22, 2026 – Stone Ridge, NY– SUNY Ulster is proud to present Black Excellence: A Legacy in Color, a collective celebration of Black artistry across media. The exhibition will be on view February 4 through February 20 at the Muroff-Kotler Visual Arts Gallery on the Stone Ridge campus.

An opening reception will take place on Wednesday, February 4, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., and is free and open to the public.

Black Excellence: A Legacy in Color features works by a diverse group of Black contemporary artists whose practices span multiple mediums and perspectives. Through vibrant color, compelling imagery, and personal narratives, the exhibition honors Black excellence during Black History Month.

Curated by Sam Goldberg, in collaboration with SUNY Ulster’s Black Student Union, and made possible by The Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc., the exhibit showcases both campus and community voices and aligns with the College’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Tuwana Leonard, president of SUNY Ulster’s Black Student Union calls the exhibit, “a celebration of the legacy, culture, and creativity of Black history through art.”

Participating artists include Hadassah Graham, Ted Dixon, Lamar Leonard, LotuZ, Jenne Currie, Jacqueline Oster, Marielena Ferrer-Harrington, Linda Rose-Winters, Jaidus, and Richard Price.

The Muroff-Kotler Visual Arts Gallery at SUNY Ulster Announces Call for Art Submissions for Black Excellence: A Legacy in Color

December 12, 2025 – Stone Ridge, NY – SUNY Ulster’s Muroff-Kotler Visual Arts Gallery is now accepting submissions for its next exhibition, Black Excellence: A Legacy in Color. The due date for submissions is Monday, December 29, 11:59 p.m. for an exhibit that will run from February 4 – 20, 2026.

Curated by Sam Goldberg, in collaboration with SUNY Ulster’s black Student Union, and made possible by The Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc., the exhibit will be a collective celebration of Black Artistry across media. Works exhibited will showcase campus and community voices exploring the diversity of Black creative expression and experience, past and present.

Milestone dates for this call for art:

Sam Goldberg, a SUNY Ulster alumnus, is a multidisciplinary artist and fabricator interested in social engagement, cooperation, and pedagogy. They collaborate with other Hudson Valley artists to create sculptures, installations, and spaces, including pieces found at the Kingston Land Trust’s Forest Sanctuary, the 2024 Future Sound of Nature Music Festival, and the 2023 Terrain Biennial in Newburgh, NY. Sam is enrolled in Prescott College’s remote Master of Fine Arts program and is a graduate of SUNY Ulster’s Fine and Visual Arts department, where they now work as the gallery/studio tech.

The Black Student Union aims to create a safe space for Black students, promote awareness and understanding of Black culture and history, empower students through leadership development, advocate for their needs on campus, and foster a sense of community.  The mission is to uplift, unite, educate, and empower students on campus.

SUNY Ulster’s Black Student Union and the Muroff Kotler Visual Arts Gallery invite the SUNY Ulster campus community and the public to submit artwork for inclusion in their February 2026 exhibition, Black Excellence: A Legacy in Color, a collective celebration of Black artistry across media. Works exhibited will showcase campus and community voices exploring the diversity of Black creative expression and experience, past and present. 

Submissions may include up to 3 works reflecting the vibrant spectrum of Black history, creativity, and identity. All media accepted.

Submission Deadline: Monday, December 29, 11:59 pm 

*Entry to this exhibition implies agreement on the part of the sender to the conditions set forth in this prospectus.

Eligibility:

  • Open to all members of the SUNY Ulster campus community and to the public.
  • Open to artworks in all media, including but not limited to 2-dimensional, 3-dimensional, digital, video/sound-based, fashion/textile, poetry, prose, and new or unconventional media.

Submission Specifications:

  • To submit work for consideration, please email: gallery@sunyulster.edu.
  • In the email subject include your last name and the words “Black Excellence” (Ex. Lastname_Black_Excellence).
  • In the body of the email include a brief statement introducing yourself and reflecting on what motivated your submission. Also include the media and dimensions of the works being submitted and any important information about how they should be handled or displayed.
  • Attach one file for each artwork you are submitting. Name files using the format: Lastname_Firstname_Titleofwork.jpg. Use only the following file types: .jpg (images), .mp4 (video), .mp3 (audio), .pdf (text).
  • 3-dimensional works may be submitted along with up to 3 additional detailed images.For video/sound-based works longer than 5 minutes please submit a short representative clip (<3 min).For written works over 1000 words please submit a representative sample of the text (<500 words).
  • *Submissions that do not follow the guidelines above may be overlooked or disqualified.

Acceptance and Delivery of Work:

Artists whose work is selected for exhibition will be notified by Monday, January 12. Exhibiting artists are invited to provide their contact details, social media @, website url, or other relevant promotional information for display alongside their work.

The gallery will accept in-person delivery of work from Tuesday, January 20 to Friday, January 23.

Artists are responsible for ensuring that their work is properly prepared for hanging/display when it arrives at the gallery. If your artwork requires special handling or hanging/display considerations, or you have questions about preparing your work, please contact the gallery prior to Tuesday, January 20. Work may also be shipped to the gallery at the artist’s expense.

Packaging must be suitable for return shipping.

SUNY Ulster Presents “time Again” an Exhibit of Drawings, Paintings, and Sculpture by Marie Mastronardo and B. Robert Johnson at the Muroff Kotler Visual Arts Gallery

October 7, 2025 – Stone Ridge, NY – The Muroff Kotler Visual Arts Gallery at SUNY Ulster is proud to present “time Again”, a two-person exhibition featuring the diverse works of Marie Mastronardo and B. Robert Johnson. The exhibit runs from October 16 through December 4, with an opening reception on October 16 from 4-6 p.m. This exhibition is sponsored by the Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc.

“time Again” brings together selected works of Johnson and Mastronardo on the 50th anniversary of their first exhibition together at the Muroff Kotler Visual Arts Gallery in 1975.

Marie Mastronardo is showing sculptures, sculpted in clay, coil built, and some done in plaster reliefs. Voluminous, yet fragile, her pieces take shape one thin coil at a time from the ground up and evolve into free-flowing figurative vessels and sculptures. Ms. Mastronardo holds a B.A. in art from Hunter College followed by a year’s travel in Europe, a decade long association with the Art Students” League, studying drawing with Marshall Glasier, painting with Julian Levi, and sculpture with John Hovannes. She has participated in both solo and group shows in New York City and upstate New York.

Robert Johnson is a multidisciplinary artist who describes his paintings and drawings as geometric landscapes and interpretations of the natural world, balancing realism and abstraction to represent the essence of beauty that nature possesses. Mr. Johnson holds a B.F.A. from Pratt Institute and is the Director of Graphic & Printing Services at SUNY Ulster, designing award-winning visual communication publications for the promotion of the College. In addition, he serves on the Exhibition Committee for the Muroff Kotler Visual Arts Gallery, was a past board member of the Art Society of Kingston, curated the city-wide outdoor Sculpture Biennial in 2011, and has been making art cars for the Kingston Artists Soapbox Derby since 1999.

“time Again” reflects both artists’ life-long commitment to art making and the way art invites the viewer to return, reconsider, and see their work anew.

SUNY Ulster Holds Alumni Art Exhibition June 26 – July 24

June 18, 2025 – Stone Ridge, NY – SUNY Ulster is pleased to present a celebration of work by our valued alumni at the Muroff-Kotler Visual Arts Gallery from June 26 through July 24. The opening reception will take place on June 26 from 4-6 p.m. This exhibit is made possible by the Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc.

Open to all alumni, the show is curated by John DeGasperis, Esq. a founding partner at New York Injury Law, LLP, Chair of the Ulster Community College Foundation Board of Directors, and SUNY Ulster alumnus, ‘02.

The exhibit features work in a variety of media by over 20 alumni. The artists included in this exhibit graduated from SUNY Ulster from 1971 through 2021 and represents those who were art students as well as those who were in other programs. The artists include:

Call for Entry

The Department of Fine and Visual Art and the SUNY Ulster Foundation invites all SUNY Ulster alumni to submit work to be included in the 2025 Alumni Exhibition. Alumni can submit up to three pieces for consideration.  All artwork must be original and all media are acceptable.

Eligibility

Open to all SUNY Ulster alumni. Works must be completed after graduation, preferably within the last three years. Artwork may be 2-dimensional, 3-dimensional, video-based, or installation/site-specific.

Entry to this exhibition implies agreement on the part of the sender to the conditions set forth in this prospectus.

Media/Specifications

All work accepted for the show must be ready to hang, be self-supporting on a pedestal or the floor, be prepared for viewing on a monitor, or be ready for display in another specified manner.

Three-dimensional or installation work may include up to 2 additional detail images. Artists submitting video artwork must submit a 5 minute clip of the video for review. Potential final acceptance of video work will be determined after viewing the full video.

Submission Format

  • All works must be submitted in .jpg format.
  • Submissions will be accepted online only; any submitted work that differs from the digital entry guidelines below may be disqualified.
  • All image files must be named exactly as follows: Lastname_Firstname_Titleofwork.jpg
  • IMPORTANT: The names of your image files must not contain spaces or special characters ( – / . # etc). Underscores _ are fine.
  • Files must be 72 dpi and no more than 600 pixels on its largest side
  • Email files to: Gallery@sunyulster.edu Please include “Alumni Exhibition” in your subject line.

Delivery of Work

Selected artists are requested to provide a current artist statement to accompany exhibited artwork addressing where you are in your career. Additionally, selected artists are requested to provide information for promotion (3 images, contact information, website, and social media contact).

Accepted work may be delivered in person or shipped postage paid by the artist in appropriate packaging for artwork that is reusable upon return shipment.

Presentation

Wall-mounted work: Not to exceed 5’ in height or width, and 60 lbs.

Installations: May not alter the character of gallery walls, ceiling or floor.

Pedestals will be provided for 3-D work.

All works must be ready to install. 2-D work must be framed under plexiglass or glass (with exception of works on canvas) and wired with the necessary hanging device attached. Unframed works should be shipped with the appropriate hanging equipment and installation instructions.

The juror or Program Coordinator may withhold works that are misrepresented by digital submission or that are not adequately prepared for display.

April 29, 2025 – Stone Ridge, NY – SUNY Ulster’s Muroff-Kotler Visual Arts Gallery invites all alumni to submit their creative work for a juried exhibition from June 26 – July 24, 2025. The deadline for submissions is Friday, May 16.

In addition to being an alumnus of the College, artwork must be completed after graduation, preferably within the last three years. Artwork can be two or three-dimensional, video-based, or installation-specific. Alumni can access the full Call for Artists on the SUNY Ulster Blog, which includes submission formats, how to deliver work, and presentation requirements, among other important details.

Juried by guest curator and alumnus, John A. DeGasperis, Esq. ‘02, this event is made possible by the Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc.

SUNY Ulster Holds Student Art Exhibition This May

April 25, 2025 – Stone Ridge, NY – Students from the Fine Art: Visual Art program of SUNY Ulster will hold a spring exhibition of their work on the Stone Ridge campus. The exhibition will run from Thursday, May 8 through Saturday, May 24. The opening will be held on May 8 from 4-6 p.m. in the Muroff Kotler Visual Arts Gallery in Vanderlyn Hall, room 265.

The Fine Art/Visual Art Exhibition will feature work from the graduating class of 2025. Displayed outside the gallery will be a curated selection of student work representing a range of art courses, including Drawing and Composition II, Painting, Printmaking, Watercolor, Introduction to Drawing, Photography, and Introduction to Design Foundations.

SUNY Ulster’s art programs provide students with foundation courses and career skills, taught by faculty who are working professionals in their fields. Students learn artistic, technical, and theoretical skills in addition to general education courses that prepare them for transfer to complete their four-year degree or enter the job market. Many of SUNY Ulster’s art graduates transfer to top art colleges such as Fashion Institute of Technology, School of Visual Arts, SUNY New Paltz, and more.
