SUNY Ulster Students Bring Awareness to Fashion Sustainability Options

SUNY Ulster students looking at the flip book for reuse reduce recycle they made.

After learning the harsh realities of the fashion industry from their professor Kristin Flynn, four first year students at SUNY Ulster sought to bring attention to the harmful impact of ‘fast-fashion’ and the steps we can all take to limit our footprint.

Rosa Onderdonk-Knaus, Jackson Zavala, Arden Johnson, and Izzy Vicari note a few issues with the industry:

  • 8% of global Carbon emissions are due to the fashion industry
  • 10% of microplastics in our oceans originate from textiles
  • 85% of all textiles end up in landfills yearly

The Fashion industry’s global emissions are expected to double by the end of the decade. “We want to empower people to make choices that help lessen the impact” Vicari said during an interview with Blue Stone Press reporter, Anne Pyburn Craig. The foursome is promoting the old adage, “Reuse, Reduce, Recycle”.

The students agree that a cultural transition from fast-fashion to sustainable fashion will be a tough but necessary shift. The average person in the United States discards 81 pounds of clothing each year. To put that in perspective, that’s about the weight of a twelve year old child. Instead of tossing clothing into the trash over a rip or missing button Vitari suggests learning some “simple mending”, in fact events like Repair Cafe in Kingston are a wonderful resource to learn these skills. All the students encourage people to recycle properly using Fab Scrap which picks up leftover materials or The Blue Jeans Go Green program that collects denim (made from cotton) so that it can be recycled back to its original fiber state and transformed into something new.

In addition to reducing our closets turning door, we can all be conscientious when we buy. Pre-loved and gently used clothing from Peoples Place, Lovefield Consignment, and Rock Candy Vintage always have beautiful clothing that you can feel good about purchasing. Finally, turn those old threads into funky new items to give them a new life!

After learning about the environmental impact of the fashion industry these students are still passionate about the field they’ve chosen, and seem to have valuable ideas and information to share about the future of the fashion industry. Cavala admits she’s “absolutely getting a solid and excellent foundation” here at SUNY Ulster.

SUNY Ulster Alumni Add Innovative New Classes to Art Department Curriculum

Alumni Arts students pose by their artwork and instruments

June 23, 2022 – Stone Ridge, NY – Curatorial Studies and Music of the World are two new classes being introduced at SUNY Ulster for fall 2022. Taught by arts department alumni Allison Constant ‘09 and Paul Chambers ‘11, both courses provide an introduction to their topics with hands-on experience.

Curatorial Studies address all aspects of curating a contemporary art exhibition using the College’s Muroff-Kotler Visual Arts Gallery as the classroom. Local artists together with students will research, discuss, reflect, and analyze information and works of art. Students will participate in artist studio visits, image collection and management, exhibition planning and layout, promotion and social media, and the organization of an exhibiting arts lecture and educational programming for students and community members. Students will also visit local galleries, museums, and art events and engage with the local art community. The culmination of this class will be an exhibition in the Muroff-Kotler Visual Arts Gallery.

Allison Constant graduated from SUNY Ulster with an Associate’s degree in Fine Arts/Visual Arts in 2009 and continued her studies at SUNY New Paltz where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Art degree in both Painting and Drawing and Photography. She is the owner and founder of ARTBAR Gallery in Kingston where she has curated over 100 exhibitions. Allison loves the challenge of creating exhibits that are visually thoughtful with the viewers’ perspective in mind and is excited to share her skills and experiences as a curator and gallerist in the upcoming Curatorial Studies class.

Music of the World is an introduction to the concepts of ethnomusicology. It encompasses a range of musical styles from nonwestern regions of the world including Africa, East Asia, and the Middle East. An emphasis is placed on learning to perform and listen to various genres that will lead to an understanding of how music reflects influences from culture and society. Traditional instruments will be incorporated into the class as students learn to understand the cultural significance of music and how geography and historical events contribute to musical development.

Paul Chambers graduated from SUNY Ulster in 2011 with an Associate’s degree in Music. He then attained his Bachelor’s degree in music education and Master’s degree in percussion performance from SUNY Fredonia. In addition to his role as an adjunct instructor at SUNY Ulster, he is ensemble director of the championship-winning Arlington High School Marching Band and Winter Percussion Ensemble. He is in demand as a performer throughout the Hudson Valley in a variety of professional orchestras, musical theater organizations, and jazz ensembles, including principal positions with the Woodstock Symphony Orchestra and Woodstock Playhouse.

Other performance highlights include being selected as a member of the International Marimba Orchestra for the 2021 Percussive Arts Society International Convention. He won a position in the inaugural World Percussion Group of 2016, which is an ensemble, conceived to give wide-reaching exposure and experience to the most promising up-and-coming percussionists around the world. He is an avid performer, researcher, and clinician of traditional African music. He studied abroad in Ghana on three separate occasions and, in 2016, was awarded a Fulbright grant to document and study traditional music in South Africa. The resulting research is published in the academic journal, African Music.

Drive In Arts Exhibition at SUNY Ulster on April 30

Collage of students participating in the arts exhibition

April 13, 2021 – Stone Ridge, NY – SUNY Ulster is holding a Drive In Arts Exhibition on April 30, 2021 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Rain date is May 1 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

On exhibit will be art from SUNY Ulster’s first and second year arts program students including Fashion Design, Fine Art/Visual Art, and Music. When visitors drive onto the SUNY Ulster campus, they will be guided through the outdoor exhibits by directional signage, a printed program, and by dialing into a specifically designated radio station to learn more about the works, educational programs, and to hear the performing ensembles.

The Fine Art/Visual Art program is a foundation-based program preparing students for transfer to four-year institutions or career entry. On view will be first-year student paintings, drawings, photography, design, and printmaking. Second year students will display their transfer/career portfolio projects. Second-year students will be finishing their Bachelor degrees at the School of Visual Arts, SUNY New Paltz, and SUNY Fredonia, among other colleges.

The Fashion Design program will be showing pencil skirts and button down shirts that highlight the pattern-making, sewing, and construction skills by first-year students. Second-year graduating students will show their final collections: a coordinated group of garments with tops, pants, dresses, and coats that include a focus on surface decorations including embroidery, applique, and patchwork. Graduating students will be transferring to the Fashion Institute of Technology, Savannah College of Art and Design or SUNY Oneonta to complete their four-year degrees.

The Music program will feature several of their performing ensembles available to students and community members including the SUNY Ulster Community Band, Jazz Ensemble, College Chorus, and Guitar Ensemble. Some of the four-year institutions music program students are transferring to include SUNY Fredonia, SUNY Potsdam, Ithaca, and Bard.

To keep traffic flowing, interested attendees are required to register and choose a convenient time slot.
