Hudson River Marsh Sediments and The Stories They Tell

October 11, 2023 – Stone Ridge, NY – The STEM department at SUNY Ulster presents their annual John Burroughs Natural Science Lecture on October 24, 2023, at 7 p.m. with Dr. Dorothy Peteet, a senior research scientist at NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies. Ms. Peteet will speak about Hudson River Marsh Sediments and The Stories They Tell.

Free to the public and taking place in the Burroughs Lecture Hall (BUR 120), Dorothy Peteet will talk about blue carbon, the human effect on marshes, and how sea level rises will affect Hudson River marshes. Learn how Dr. Peteet and her team use pollen macrofossils, and x-ray fluorescence to understand the history of climate and human impact on marshes that are vital for our environment.

Dr. Dorothy Peteet is a senior research scientist at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York City. She is also affiliated with Columbia University and is director of the Paleoecology Laboratory at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in Palisades, N.Y.

The John Burroughs Natural Science Lecture Series is named in honor of the renowned local naturalist, John Burroughs, and is sponsored by SUNY Ulster’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) department. The series seeks to periodically bring speakers to the SUNY Ulster campus, offering free lectures to the academic community and the general public on topics of interest in the natural sciences.
